A sand cream Jaldar rug: broad diagonal bands cross the field and divide it into a column of three large octagons, and each octagon holds a diamond-shaped gül with a sawtooth edge and a small star at its centre. Bands of diamond lattice close each end, and several narrow stripes of small flowers and diamonds frame the design.

Hand-knotted in Pakistan in wool, with a soft, lustrous pile. At 64×95cm this is an extra small rug, a good size for an entrance or beside a bed.

Material: 100 percent wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the pile is made for everyday use, including busy spots like an entrance.

A light ground like this shows dark marks more than a deep ground would, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

Jaldar takes its name from jaal, meaning net or lattice, and that net is the heart of this design. Broad diagonal bands cross the field and meet at short horizontal links, dividing it into a column of three large octagonal compartments. Inside each compartment sits a diamond-shaped gül with a serrated, sawtooth outline and a small star at its centre. Where the bands reach the border, the compartments are cut off, so the lattice seems to continue beyond the edge of the rug, a feature borrowed from Turkmen weaving. At each end, a band of diamond lattice closes the field, and several narrow stripes of small flowers, diamonds and slanting leaves frame everything. The drawing is crisp and regular, so the structure reads clearly even at this small size. It suits an entrance or a bedside.
