Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

An apricot Jaldar rug with three stepped diamond güls running down the middle of the field, each centred on a small cross-shaped flower. Half-güls with staircase edges reach in from the long sides between them, so the open apricot ground forms the net that gives Jaldar its name. Wide bands of diamond-and-cross lattice finish each end, and several narrow guard stripes of tiny crosses and flowers frame the whole design.

Hand-knotted in Pakistan in wool, with a soft, lustrous pile. At 62×88cm this is an extra small rug, a good size for an entrance or beside a bed.

  • Origin: Pakistan
  • Type: Pakistani Jaldar, hand-knotted
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Design: Gul (Jaldar)
  • Size: 62×88cm (2'0"×2'11") — Extra Small
  • Colour: Apricot
  • SKU: M 828436
  • One-of-a-kind: Yes

Material: 100 percent wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the pile is made for everyday use, including busy spots like an entrance.

A light ground like this shows dark marks more than a deep ground would, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

This Jaldar's net is drawn by the motifs themselves. Three large stepped diamond güls run down the centre of the open field, each built from layered, staircase outlines around a small cross-shaped flower. From both long sides, stepped half-güls reach in between them, so the open ground left between the shapes reads as a lattice binding the design together, the idea behind the name Jaldar, from jaal, meaning net. The half-güls are cut off by the border, a Turkmen device that makes the pattern seem to carry on beyond the rug. Wide bands of diamond-and-cross lattice close each end, and many narrow guard stripes of small crosses and flowers frame the field. The drawing is crisp and the layout balanced, so it reads clearly even at this small size. It suits an entrance or a bedside.
