Four crimson octagons stacked in a single column, joined by narrow ivory lattice bands that open into grey-blue and ivory triangles where they meet the frame. Each octagon holds a stepped diamond gül with hooked, serrated edges in black, red and ivory, and at the heart of each gül is an ivory panel with small dark rings set around a red-orange centre. Borders of alternating crimson and grey-blue lozenges on tan run between fine guard stripes, with a band of diamond lattice at each end, closed by a plain crimson outer band and ivory fringe.

Hand-knotted in wool. The centre of every gül is the same small ivory panel, with dark rings arranged around a single red-orange dot, so the four güls carry four identical pale hearts down the length of the rug. At 79×119cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with ivory fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the dense pile of a Jaldar is made for everyday floor use.

Bright crimson hides everyday marks well but is a saturated colour, and will show fading from strong sunlight before the darker borders do. The plain crimson inside each octagon will show pile shading, and the ivory gül centres and fringe will show dirt first at a doorway.

Each gül on this rug is built in layers, from the outside in. First comes the serrated edge: a black outline broken into small hooks and teeth. Then a band of red and ivory steps. Then, at the very centre, a pale ivory panel — and inside it, small dark rings arranged around a single red-orange dot. Stand over the rug and it is those ivory hearts that catch the eye first, four pale points running down the crimson column, each one framed by the dark hooked edge around it. The effect is like a row of lit windows in a dark wall. It is the lightest part of each motif placed exactly at its centre, which is why a rug this saturated still reads as calm and ordered rather than busy.
