A vermilion Bokhara rug with four Turkmen güls spaced down the centre of the field. Each gül is a rounded octagon divided by a cross, its quarters filled with small hooked figures. Stepped half-güls sit along both long sides, wide bands of diamond lattice close each end, and narrow stripes of small diamonds and a row of tiny star flowers frame the design.

Hand-knotted in Pakistan in wool, with a soft, lustrous pile. At 63×99cm this is an extra small rug, a good size for an entrance or beside a bed.

Material: 100 percent wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the pile is made for everyday use, including busy spots like an entrance.

A deep, warm ground like this hides everyday marks well, but strong colours can fade unevenly in direct sunlight, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

Four güls spaced evenly down the field give this small rug a calm, airy version of the Bokhara layout. Each gül is the classic Turkmen octagon: rounded, divided into four by a cross, with tiny hooked figures in every quarter. With only four güls rather than five, there is more open ground around each one, so the pale motifs stand out boldly against the deep, saturated ground. Stepped half-güls along the sides are cut off by the border, a Turkmen way of suggesting that the pattern runs on beyond the edge. Wide bands of diamond lattice, the elem panels, close each end, and narrow stripes of small diamonds and a row of tiny star flowers frame the whole design. It suits an entrance, a bedside or any small space that needs a warm, traditional accent.
