A salmon field carrying twelve octagonal Turkmen güls in two columns, each with a solid red frame around a salmon centre worked in fine ivory, grey, gold and black detail. Small ivory star-flowers sit between the güls down the centre, with half-motifs along both sides. The main border is a continuous chain of interlocking ivory and grey-green links, each holding a small red diamond, set between fine guard stripes and zigzag bands, closed by a plain red outer band and ivory fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The border chain runs unbroken around all four sides: every link passes over and under its neighbours like a braided ribbon, and each one frames a single red diamond. At 78×129cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with ivory fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the close pile of a Bokhara is made for everyday floor use.

The salmon field and the ivory chain border are the lightest parts of the rug and will show marks and pile shading first. The red güls and red outer band are more forgiving, but red wool next to a pale ground is the combination to protect from spills.

Most Bokhara rugs are recognised by their field, but this one is best recognised by its border. Put a finger on any link in the wide ivory band that frames the güls and follow it: it crosses over the next link, dips under the one after, and carries on, so the whole border reads as a single braided ribbon running round all four sides without a break. Each link frames one small red diamond, which gives the chain a steady beat. It is a demanding border to weave, because the crossings have to stay aligned from the first row of knots to the last, and any slip shows as a kink in the braid. Inside it, the field keeps to the Turkmen tradition — twelve red-framed güls in two columns, with small star-flowers between — so the rug sets a lively, interlaced frame around a calm, orderly centre.
