An open peach field with no large güls at all: instead, four small cross-shaped minor güls in black, ivory, rust and blue-grey run down the centre, with half-motifs set against both sides of the field. A wide main border is divided into compartments, with a small gül in every other panel and bands of tiny hooked motifs between them. At each end a separate panel of diamond lattice closes the design, with ivory fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The field carries only the minor güls of the Turkmen design, leaving most of the peach ground plain, while the border is densely patterned — the ornament sits around the edge rather than in the middle. At 77×122cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with ivory fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the close pile of a Bokhara is made for everyday floor use.

Because most of the peach field is plain, it will show pile shading, vacuum tracks and marks more readily than a densely patterned rug — the open ground looks lighter or darker depending on which way the pile has been brushed. The busy border is far more forgiving.

Most Bokhara rugs fill their field with rows of large octagonal güls. This one leaves them out entirely and keeps only the small cross-shaped figures that normally sit between them — the minor güls. Four run down the centre, and halves of the same motif are set against both edges of the field, as if the pattern continued beyond the frame. With the large güls removed, the peach ground opens up and the rug feels light and airy. The ornament has moved to the border instead. Look at it closely: it is divided into compartments like a row of tiles, with a small gül in every other panel and bands of tiny hooked shapes between them. This panelled border comes from the Tekke Turkmen, and so do the diamond-lattice panels at each end, which in Turkmen weaving are a separate band called the elem. The result reverses the usual order — a quiet centre inside a busy frame.
