A raspberry red field carrying twelve Turkmen güls in two columns, each an octagon outlined in navy and filled with stepped hooks in ivory, gold, olive and rose around a small diamond centre. Smaller cross-shaped minor güls in ivory, gold and navy stand in the spaces between them, down the centre and along the edges of the field. Multi-band borders of hooked repeats, diamond diaper and a zigzag lattice at each end run on all four sides in navy, gold, olive and red, with ivory fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The field holds twelve major güls, two across and six down, and every gap between them is filled by a minor gül, so no part of the red ground is left without a motif at its centre. At 79×124cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with ivory fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the close pile of a Bokhara is made for everyday floor use.

Raspberry red is a bright, saturated colour, and it will show fading from strong sunlight sooner than a deep madder or burgundy would. The ivory in the güls and the ivory fringe are the parts that show dirt first on a small rug used at a doorway.

A Bokhara field works on two sizes of motif, and it is worth telling them apart. The large octagons are the major güls — the emblem the Turkmen tribes wove into their rugs, and the reason these rugs came to be sold under the name of Bukhara, the market town they passed through. This rug has twelve of them, two across and six down. Now look at the spaces between: each one holds a smaller, cross-shaped figure, the minor gül. It is thinner, lighter and drawn mostly in ivory and gold rather than navy, so it never competes with the octagons, but it is what turns a set of separate medallions into a continuous pattern. Cover the minor güls with your hands and the major ones seem to float on a plain red ground; uncover them and the whole field locks together into a grid.
