A deep ruby red field carrying a single column of Turkmen güls, each filled with cream and apricot devices around a sage green centre and edged with a dashed dark outline. Small chevron devices flank them at both field edges. Wide multi-band borders carry a row of large star-güls in alternating cream and apricot, each on a short stalk, with narrow guards of green and orange beads either side, and a bold diamond panel closes the end. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The güls are not outlined with a continuous line but with a row of short dark bars, so the red ground shows through the outline itself at regular intervals. At 70×139cm this is a small rug, suited to a bedside, an entrance or a galley kitchen. A deep red ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. At this size the rug is light enough to lift and shake out, which is the easiest way to keep it clean.

A deep red ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have and hides everyday marks well. The cream in the güls and in the alternating border rosettes is the vulnerable colour — it is the palest thing here and the first to grey, and on a small rug it sits where the traffic crosses.

Look closely at where a gül meets the red around it. The boundary is not a line. It is a row of short dark bars set end to end with a gap between each one, so that the ground colour comes through the outline at regular intervals all the way round the octagon. From standing height it reads as an ordinary dark contour; from a metre away it resolves into something closer to stitching.

Drawing an edge this way does two things at once. It softens the boundary — a dashed line separates less emphatically than a solid one, so the gül sits into the field rather than on top of it — and it keeps the red present inside the emblem's own edge, which ties the column to its ground. It is also unforgiving: a solid line can absorb an uneven knot without anyone noticing, whereas a dashed one has to keep its rhythm, and any bar that runs long or short shows immediately against its neighbours. Follow one gül round and check whether the spacing holds.
