Sand Beige Turkmen Gül Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, finished with an ivory fringe at both ends. The small hooks inside each gül — the rust and the blue-grey together account for well under two per cent of the rug — need a good knot count to stay legible.

This is a pale rug and the borders share the field's sand ground, so there is no darker margin anywhere to absorb wear at the edges. The compensation is that the güls are outlined in walnut, a clear step darker than everything around them, so ordinary marks in the field break up against that drawing rather than sitting in open ground.

Sliding the pattern down over itself one row gives a match of 0.79. Two rows, 0.69. Three, 0.63. Four rows — 62cm of weaving — and it is still 0.62, which is seventy-eight per cent of what a single step gave. That flatness is the interesting number, more than the height of the first peak.

On a hand-knotted rug each row is placed by eye against the one below it, so a small error in any row is inherited by every row after it. Errors compound, and the usual signature is a match that falls away steadily with distance: strong between neighbours, weak between rows far apart. Here it barely falls at all, which means the weaver was not measuring against the previous row but against something fixed — the loom, a marked warp, a counted knot — and correcting back to it each time. It is the difference between copying a copy and returning to the original. The field also alternates: a half step sideways gives minus 0.37, the signature of two different motifs taking turns across the width, which here are the güls and the slimmer devices between them.
