Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A cream field carrying rows of small Turkmen güls outlined in walnut and filled with dark brown and old gold, with slim stepped devices between the columns. Deep multi-band borders on the same cream ground frame the field, running rosette cartouches, hooked repeats and fine diamond diaper, and closing at both ends in broad panels. Ivory fringe.

Hand-knotted in wool. The gül lattice is built on a cell exactly twice as wide as it is tall — 27.3cm between columns against 13.5cm between rows. At 204×235cm this is a medium room rug of near-square proportion, suited to a sitting room or a study.

  • Type: Hand-knotted pile rug
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Design: Pakistani Bokhara, all-over Turkmen gül
  • Size: 204×235cm (6'8"×7'9") — Medium
  • Colour: Cream with walnut and old gold
  • SKU: R 102881
  • One-of-a-kind: Yes

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, finished with an ivory fringe at both ends. Güls at a 13.5cm row pitch need a good knot count to keep their internal drawing legible; the small hooks inside each emblem would close up on a coarser weave.

This is a pale rug and the borders share the field's cream ground, so there is no darker margin anywhere to absorb wear at the edges. The compensation is that the drawing is dense and dark-outlined, so ordinary marks in the field break up against the pattern rather than sitting in open ground. At a near-square 204 by 235cm it suits a room where it will be seen whole rather than walked along.

The güls on this rug sit on a cell that is exactly twice as wide as it is tall. Sliding the pattern over itself, the columns repeat at 27.29cm and the rows at 13.51cm — a ratio of 2.02, which is one per cent away from a clean two to one. The harmonics agree: going down the rug the pattern matches itself at 13.5, 27.8, 41.6 and 54.5cm, and going across at 27.3 and 54.6cm. The second step in the vertical series lands on the first step in the horizontal one.

Which means the lattice is square at the scale of two rows. Take any gül, move one column across and two rows down, and you have travelled the same distance in both directions. That is a real constraint on the weaver rather than a happy accident — the emblem has to be drawn so that its height is precisely half its width, and then held there for thirteen courses. The effect underfoot is a field that reads as ordered rather than merely repetitive: because the geometry closes at a square, the eye finds diagonals in the güls that a lattice of some other proportion would not produce.
