Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A deep wine red field covered with rows of lobed Turkmen güls, each quartered in navy, ivory and red, with small cross-shaped minor güls set between them. Wide borders frame the field: several bands of small diamonds and stripes, a main band of octagonal güls in compartments, and broad bands at each end filled with large hooked diagonal motifs in ivory, gold and navy, closed by a short fringe.

Hand-knotted in wool. The end bands carry the largest motifs on the rug — big hooked diagonals drawn at a much bolder scale than the güls in the field — so the two ends are the strongest part of the frame. At 282×369cm this is a 9×12 room-size rug for a living room, dining room or large bedroom.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the close pile of a Bokhara is made for everyday use in living and dining rooms.

Deep wine red is one of the most practical colours for a large rug: it hides everyday marks well and fades slowly. Like any room-size rug, it will show traffic paths where people walk most, so rotating it from time to time helps it wear evenly.

This is the Bokhara in its most classic form: a deep wine red ground, rows of lobed Turkmen güls quartered in navy and ivory, and small cross-shaped minor güls filling the spaces between them. It is the design that made Turkmen rugs famous, and it works so well on a large scale because the repeat is so even — from across a room the field reads as a single rich, warm surface. Look at the two ends to see where the weaver has added drama. Beyond the main border, each end carries a broad band of big hooked diagonals in ivory, gold and navy. In Turkmen weaving this end band is called the elem, and it is drawn much larger and bolder than anything in the field. It gives the rug a clear top and bottom and a strong edge where it meets the floor, which is why a classic red Bokhara still looks so finished in a large room.
