Cherry Red Turkmen Gül Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Sherwan

100% hand-spun Afghan wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan with an ivory fringe and a woven elem panel at each end.

Practically this is about as robust as a rug gets. Under a third of one per cent of the surface is pale enough to count as neutral, so there is essentially no light wool to mark, and the border ground is darker still than the field. The fringe is the exception and will show soiling long before the pile does. At more than ten square metres this is a heavy rug; plan how it will be moved before it goes down.

Run a colour census over this rug and only one family clears three per cent of the surface. Red takes 95.7%. Everything else — every other hue on the rug put together — comes to just over four. That is a genuinely unusual result. Most rugs of this kind return two or three families above the threshold, and a rug needs five to be called multicolour.

What makes it stranger is that the rug does not look monochrome. The güls appear to be picked out in ivory and indigo in the usual Turkmen way. Sample them and the ivory measures as a dusty rose, closest to that swatch at a distance of 5.96, while blue registers at 0.02% of the entire surface — effectively nothing. The pale wool is pink and the dark wool is a very deep red. So the emblems are separated from their ground almost entirely by how light or dark the wool is, not by what colour it is. That is why the rug reads as warm from any distance and why, on an overcast day or under a low lamp, the pattern softens rather than sharpening: take away the light and you take away most of the contrast the design has to work with.
