A peach rug with a Khotan design: rosettes run down the centre of the field, a small vase at one end sends up branching stems hung with pomegranates, and stepped, key-like fret motifs frame the rosettes and fill the corners. A wide border with a meandering flowering vine surrounds the field, edged by narrow guard stripes.

Hand-knotted in Pakistan in wool, with soft natural variation in the colours that gives the small surface depth. At 59×89cm this is an extra small rug, a good size for an entrance or beside a bed.

Origin: Pakistan
Type: Pakistani high quality, hand-knotted
Material: 100% wool
Design: Khotan (pomegranate and rosette)
Size: 59×89cm (1'11"×2'11") — Extra Small
Colour: Peach
SKU: MKO 317640
One-of-a-kind: Yes

Material: 100 percent wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the pile is made for everyday use, including busy spots like an entrance.

A light ground like this shows dark marks more than a deep ground would, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

This rug uses the Khotan design, named after the oasis towns of East Turkestan on the old Silk Road. Its best-known motif is the pomegranate tree: at one end of the field, a small vase sends up branching stems, and the branches carry round, seed-filled pomegranates, a traditional image of abundance. Rosettes are set along the centre line, and around them stepped, hooked fret shapes, a motif borrowed from Chinese design, frame the field and fill the corners. A wide border with a meandering vine and small flowers surrounds everything. The drawing is relaxed and slightly irregular, which gives even this small piece a warm, handmade character. It suits an entrance, a bedside or any small space that wants a touch of colour and story.
