A deep burgundy field is covered edge to edge with the intricate ‘Mahi’ (fish) design — a shimmering all-over lattice of tiny leaves, blossoms and curving ‘fish’ in cream, green, rose and gold — gathered around a finely drawn cream medallion with pendants, in this finely knotted Persian Tabriz. A dark, flowering border of palmettes frames the field. It is a classic of Persian town weaving, prized for its density and precision.

Tabriz rugs are famed for their exceptional fineness and durability — knotted at very high density from hand-spun wool, which gives razor-sharp definition to the tiny Mahi motifs. The rich palette suits both traditional and contemporary rooms, and only deepens with age. Coloured with natural dyes and worked entirely by hand over many months, it carries the subtle irregularities of a true one-of-a-kind piece — an heirloom to be handed down for generations.

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen, and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum gently on low suction without a rotating brush, and avoid the fringes.
  • Use a rug pad underneath to cushion the pile and prevent slipping.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the natural-dyed colours.
  • Use only a specialist hand-wash rug cleaner for any deep clean.

Tabriz, in north-west Persia, is one of the oldest and most celebrated weaving cities in the world. This fine example follows the beloved ‘Mahi’ (or Herati) design — an intricate all-over lattice of tiny leaves and ‘fish’ curving around rosettes — worked across a deep burgundy field and gathered around a cream medallion with pendants.
