A pale butter-cream field with a lobed medallion at its centre and pendants reaching to either end, the whole surface worked in scrolling arabesque, palmettes and small blossoms. The accents are barely stated — soft pink, pale blue, sage and a warm tan for the scrollwork — and the border is the same brightness as the field rather than a contrasting frame, so the rug reads as one continuous luminous surface. Large scrolling acanthus forms fill the corners, and a natural fringe finishes both ends.
Hand-knotted in wool at a fine gauge, fully curvilinear throughout. This is about as pale and as tonal as a Persian rug gets, and it makes particular demands: with no strong colour anywhere, the entire design rests on the accuracy of the outline. At 198×305cm it is a large room rug, big enough for a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out. It is a rug for a considered room — there is nothing here to disguise a mark, and a pale field of this size sits largely in open floor.
