Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

An amber gold Jaldar rug with a full lattice across the field: two columns of linked compartments, each holding a star-like gül made of small leaf shapes around a tiny square, with rosette-shaped güls set where the lattice bands cross. The outer compartments are cut off by the border, so the net seems to run on beyond the rug. A border of octagons alternating with small four-leaf flowers, and end bands of linked diamonds, frame the design.

Hand-knotted in Pakistan in wool and silk, with a soft sheen that catches the light. At 63×88cm this is an extra small rug, a good size for an entrance or beside a bed.

Material: Wool and silk pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan. The wool gives strength and body, and the silk adds a soft sheen to the pile.

Silk is more delicate than wool and can show pressure marks and changes of light more readily, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

This rug shows the Jaldar net in its fullest form. Instead of a single column of güls, the whole field is covered by a lattice of linked compartments in two columns, the jaal, or net, that gives Jaldar its name. Each compartment holds a star-like gül, a stepped cross of small leaf shapes around a tiny central square, and at every point where the lattice bands cross sits a smaller rosette-shaped gül, like a knot tying the net together. The outer compartments are cut off by the border, a Turkmen device that makes the pattern feel endless. A main border of octagons alternating with small four-leaf flowers frames the field, and a band of linked diamonds closes each end. The many repeating units give the rug a rich, even texture, and the silk adds a warm sheen. It suits an entrance or a bedside.
