A dusty taupe field carrying two columns of Turkmen güls, each a rounded octagon quartered diagonally so that apricot and cream sit opposite one another, with small cross-shaped devices standing between the rows. Narrow borders of alternating cream and apricot star-güls run down both sides, and a panelled elem at each end holds a row of larger star-güls set in boxed compartments, closed by a broad diagonal-lattice band. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The whole rug is drawn with two colours: every piece of ornament on it, at every scale, is either cream or apricot, with dark brown doing all the outlining. There is no third accent anywhere. At 77×274cm this is a runner for a hallway or a landing. A mid-toned taupe ground hides everyday marks better than a pale rug, though not as well as a dark one.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which makes this a practical choice for a corridor that gets real use.

A mid-toned taupe ground sits between the extremes — it hides everyday marks better than a pale rug but not as well as a dark one. The cream is the vulnerable colour here. It is much the more used of the two accents, it is the one that will grey first, and on a runner that shows soonest along the centre line where the two columns of güls sit.

Count the colours — not the shades, the colours. Every piece of ornament on this rug is either cream or apricot: the quarters inside each gül, the star-güls running down the side borders, the larger stars boxed into the panels at both ends, the small crosses between the columns. Dark brown does the outlining, the ground is taupe, and that is the whole palette. There is no red anywhere on it, no blue and no green. That is worth stating plainly, because Turkmen weaving is normally the opposite — a madder red ground carrying four or five accents, with the variety being much of the point.

Working with two accents throws the weight onto the drawing. Where another colour would have separated two adjacent shapes, here the separation has to come from outline and position instead, which is why the dark brown line does so much work and why the güls stay legible from the far end of a corridor. It also makes the rug unusually steady: with two accents against a single ground there is little to fall out of balance as the light changes through the day, where a polychrome rug will shift its emphasis from one colour to another.
