A deep red field carrying a continuous scrolling arabesque hung with palmettes and small rosettes, worked in ivory, pale blue, sage and navy so densely that the red survives as glimpses between stems. At the centre sits a large lobed medallion in pale blue and ivory with pendants at either end, and the same pale blue returns in the four corner spandrels. A wide cream main border of flowering vine frames it, backed by pale blue and navy guard stripes, with cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool at Shesh La quality — six-ply, the grade that sits between the standard nine-ply and the very finest four-ply. The number counts the strands twisted into each thread, and fewer strands mean a finer thread, a smaller knot and finer drawing, which is why Nain quality is quoted this way rather than by knot count alone. At 202×294cm this is a large room rug, suited to a sitting room or under a full dining table. The palette is restrained in the Nain manner, five or six colours and no more, so the rug reads as considered rather than busy despite the density of the drawing.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile at Shesh La six-ply quality, with a natural fringe at both ends.

A fine pile crushes more readily under furniture legs than a coarse one, so a rug pad matters here. The deep red ground hides everyday marks well, though the cream border runs along all four edges where a rug is walked past and will show scuffing sooner than the field.

Shesh La is a quality grade, not a pattern, and it is worth understanding because Nain is graded differently from most weaving. The number counts the strands twisted together to make each thread: noh la is nine, shesh la is six, chahar la is four. Fewer strands make a thinner thread, a smaller knot and finer drawing, so the count runs backwards to intuition — a lower number is the better rug. Six-ply sits between the standard grade and the finest, and it is the level at which an arabesque can hold a true curve rather than stepping. Look at the scrolling stems in the field: follow one and it runs unbroken behind palmettes and out the other side, never thickening, never breaking into a staircase. The palette is the other Nain signature. Five or six colours and no more, which forces the design to carry itself on drawing alone — there is no variety of colour to fall back on, so every line has to be worth looking at.
