A soft rose field is covered with a fine all-over herati (‘mille-fleurs’) lattice of tiny leaves and blossoms, gathered around a hexagonal medallion with ivory corner spandrels, in this finely knotted Persian Bijar. A deep, flowering border of palmettes frames the field. Bijar rugs — the famous ‘iron rugs’ of Persia — are prized for being among the densest and most hard-wearing of all hand-knotted rugs.
Bijar rugs are woven with an exceptionally tight, heavy structure that makes them remarkably durable — a true heirloom weave, hand-spun from tough Kurdish highland wool. The natural-dyed palette only mellows with age. Worked entirely by hand over many months, every motif is drawn a little differently — the honest mark of a genuine one-of-a-kind, hand-made piece, to be handed down for generations.
