An ivory field carrying a continuous scrolling arabesque hung with palmettes, curled leaves and small blossoms, with a lobed star medallion at the centre worked in blue, wine and cream. Deep red corner spandrels anchor the four corners, and a wide ivory main border of flowering vine frames the whole, backed by pale blue and navy guard stripes. Cream fringe at both ends.
Hand-knotted in wool. The palette is held to about seven colours — ivory, blue, wine, tan, sage, cream and navy — which is the Nain discipline: with little variety available the design has to carry itself on drawing, and the arabesque is deliberately drawn finer than the palmettes it supports. At 167×206cm this is a smaller room rug, useful in a study, a bedroom or a compact sitting room where a full-size piece would crowd the floor. The ivory ground is elegant but will show traffic more readily than a dark rug would.
