A finely hand-knotted Nain from the desert-edge town of Nain in central Persia (Iran), woven in 100% hand-spun wool. The deep navy field carries a full Shah Abbasi arabesque of scrolling vines, palmettes and curled saz leaves drawn almost entirely in ivory and cream, with pale sky blue used for the finer linework so the pattern appears lit against the dark ground.

A round radial medallion in cream, blue and rose anchors the centre, with pendant palmettes above and below and ivory spandrels closing the corners. A broad madder-red main border of palmettes and flowering vine frames the whole, with a plain camel outer band and the weaver's signature cartouche woven into the lower border. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Most Nain rugs are woven on ivory, and the pale blue linework that identifies the town reads as a drawing on a light page. Reverse the ground to navy, as here, and the whole logic of the design inverts: now the ivory arabesque is the light, and it appears to float above the dark field rather than sit on it. It is a harder rug to weave for exactly that reason — every line has to be placed correctly to read against the navy at all, with no soft ground to absorb a hesitation. A madder-red border completes the classical Persian triad of navy, ivory and red, and the weaver has signed the piece in a small cartouche at the lower edge. Nain has produced work of this standard since the 1930s, when the town's cloth weavers turned to carpets and brought a textile-maker's precision to the loom.
