Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A finely hand-knotted Nain from the desert-edge town of Nain in central Persia (Iran), woven in 100% hand-spun wool. The ivory-cream field carries a full Shah Abbasi arabesque of scrolling vines, palmettes and curled saz leaves, drawn throughout in the pale sky-blue linework that is the hallmark of Nain weaving, with wine red and brown used sparingly as accents.

A round radial medallion in blue and camel anchors the centre, with pendant palmettes above and below. The wide camel-beige main border carries blue and ivory flowerheads between fine rope-twist guard stripes. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum gently and regularly on a low setting.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally hand-cleaned every few years.

Nain sits on the edge of the central Iranian desert, and its workshops turned from weaving fine cloth to weaving carpets in the 1930s, bringing a textile-maker's precision to the loom that the town has been known for ever since. What identifies a Nain is not the medallion or the arabesque, both of which many towns weave, but the way the drawing is coloured: the vines, tendrils and leaf outlines are laid in pale chalky blue rather than in strong colour, so an ivory field worked edge to edge still reads as light and open. Here the camel-beige border does the opposite job, warming the edges and stopping the blue from cooling the whole piece. Wine red appears only in the smallest flowerheads, and is the better for it.
