Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A design of nested rectangular frames working inward from the edge, alternating light and dark: a broad chestnut outer field flecked with cream dots, a band of fine horizontal stripes, a pale camel frame, a dark brown band scattered with small cream flecks, and at the centre a plain camel panel edged with a sawtooth line. Every band is a different texture rather than a different motif. Woven without fringe, finished at the ends with a plain selvedge.

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool. The whole rug sits in one colour family — measured, ninety-eight per cent of the surface falls in a single orange-gold range — so the frames are separated by depth alone, and the design reads as a series of light and dark rings from the centre out. At 61×90cm this is a small mat, suited to a bedside, an entrance or a wall hanging.

  • Type: Hand-knotted pile rug
  • Material: Ghazni wool
  • Design: Loribaf, nested concentric frames
  • Size: 61×90cm (2'0"×2'11") — Extra Small
  • Colour: Camel and chestnut brown, with cream
  • SKU: MILB 121080
  • One-of-a-kind: Yes

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool, the highland fleece from central Afghanistan, valued for its long staple and natural lustre. The pile is dense and resilient, and because the design depends on how each band catches the light, the sheen of the wool is doing real work here rather than being incidental.

Large areas of this rug are plain or lightly textured, so it is less forgiving than a patterned piece — footmarks and crushing show more readily with no drawing to break them up, and the pale centre panel is the most exposed part of all.

There is no motif on this rug at all — no medallion, no gül, no flower. What it has instead is structure: five rectangular frames nested inside one another, working in from the edge to a plain panel at the centre. Measured as a brightness profile from the middle outward, they alternate. The centre panel is light, the band around it drops sharply into dark, the next frame rises to the brightest point on the whole rug, then falls away again through a mid-toned striped band into the dark outer field.

What separates one frame from the next is not colour — ninety-eight per cent of the rug sits within a single orange-gold range — but depth and texture. One band is flecked with small cream dots, another is ruled into fine horizontal stripes, another is left entirely plain, and the centre panel is edged with a sawtooth line that is the only drawn shape on the piece. It is a way of building a rug from tone and surface rather than pattern, and it is why something with no ornament at all still holds the eye: there is always another edge working inward.
