Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A crimson field carrying an all-over Sarouk floral: slender stems rising and arching outward, hung with flowering sprays, palmettes and small blossoms in gold, cream, sage, green and blue. The design is mirrored about the centre line and there is no medallion. A deep indigo border of palmettes and rosettes frames the field, backed by fine barber-pole guards in gold and red. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool to the 16/16 quality — a square count, and the finest grade in this group. The drawing shows it: stems taper as they curve, blossoms carry three or four colours each, and the outlines follow curves rather than stepping. At 63×89cm this is a small mat, suited to a bedside, an entrance or a wall hanging.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted to the 16/16 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. A square knot count — the same number of knots per inch in both directions — is what allows curved drawing to read evenly, and it is the reason the fine detail here holds together at this small size.

A crimson ground is among the more forgiving colours a rug can have, and the indigo border better still. The cream and gold in the flowers are the vulnerable colours — they are the palest things here and the first to grey, and at this level of detail a loss of contrast costs more than it would on a coarser rug.

The tag on this rug gives its quality as 16/16 — sixteen knots to the inch in each direction, so the knots are square rather than stretched. That matters for a curvilinear design like this one. A knot grid cannot draw a curve; it can only approximate one in steps, and when the grid is denser vertically than horizontally, curves come out lopsided — a stem bending left looks different from the same stem bending right. On a square count, both directions step at the same rate and a curve reads the same whichever way it turns.

Look at the arching stems and you can see the benefit. Each one tapers as it curves, thinning from its base towards its tip, which takes several knots of graduation to achieve and would simply be lost at a coarser count. The blossoms carry three or four colours each within a few millimetres. Fold the rug down its length and the two halves answer each other stem for stem, and because the count is square, the mirrored pairs curve identically rather than one looking tighter than the other. It is the sort of quality that does not announce itself from across a room but is unmistakable when you crouch down.
