Hand-knotted entrance mats in wool and silk, most around 60×90cm, the classic size for a Japanese genkan. Why a hand-knotted entrance mat

  • Made for footfall: a dense wool pile springs back instead of crushing flat, and dust settles into it rather than showing on the surface.
  • Lasts for years: a hand-knotted mat outlives several machine-made ones and can be professionally cleaned.
  • The first thing guests see: a one-of-a-kind rug in the genkan sets the tone for the whole home.

Choosing the right size

Space Suggested size
Standard genkan (inside the door) about 60×90cm
Wide genkan or entrance hall about 70×120cm to 90×150cm
Long entrance passage a hallway runner

Measure the space and allow for the door: hand-knotted mats are about 1 to 2cm thick (Gabbeh is the thickest), so check that a door opening inwards clears the pile.

Frequently asked questions

Will the mat slip?

A heavy hand-knotted mat moves far less than a light synthetic one. On smooth floors we recommend a thin non-slip underlay cut slightly smaller than the mat.

Can it go outside the front door?

We recommend using it inside. Wool handles humidity, but rain and long hours of direct sun can fade colours and cause mildew.

How do I clean it?

Shake it out or vacuum it regularly, blot spills straight away, and have it professionally washed every few years.
