Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A grey rug in the Khotan style: a large round medallion of concentric rings, with a band of scallops, a ring of small flowers and a lotus-like rosette at its centre, sits in the middle of the field, with four smaller flower-filled roundels at the corners. Short flowering stems and leaves fill the ground between them, and a border of leafy sprigs in a herringbone rhythm frames the design.

Hand-knotted in Pakistan in wool, with a soft, lustrous pile. At 62×96cm this is an extra small rug, a good size for an entrance or beside a bed.

Material: 100 percent wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the pile is made for everyday use, including busy spots like an entrance.

A soft mid-tone ground like this hides everyday marks well, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

This design comes from Khotan, an oasis town on the Silk Road in East Turkestan, whose weavers favoured round medallions rather than the lobed or diamond shapes of Persian rugs. Here a large circular medallion fills the centre, built up in concentric rings: an outer band of scallops, a ring of small flowers, and a lotus-like rosette at the heart. Four smaller roundels filled with blossoms sit at the corners of the field, echoing the centre in the classic Khotan arrangement of one large circle and four small ones. Between them, short flowering stems and leaves are scattered freely over the ground, drawn in soft, flowing lines. A border of leafy sprigs set in a diagonal herringbone rhythm, with narrow guard stripes of small scallops, frames the whole design. It suits an entrance or a bedside.
