Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A ruby red rug in the Mahi Tabriz design: a lobed central medallion with pendants above and below sits on a field covered with the fine mahi pattern of small rosettes in a diamond lattice, flanked by curved leaves. Curving corner spandrels shape the field, and a wide border of palmettes, flowers and cartouches frames the design.

Hand-knotted in wool, with a dense, even pile. At 60×89cm this is an extra small rug, a good size for an entrance or beside a bed.

Material: 100 percent wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the dense pile is made for everyday use, including busy spots like an entrance.

A deep, warm ground like this hides everyday marks well, but strong colours can fade unevenly in direct sunlight, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

This design comes from Tabriz, one of the great carpet-weaving cities of north-west Iran, and is known as Mahi, from the Persian word for fish. The name refers to the pattern that fills the field: small rosettes set in a fine diamond lattice, each flanked by curved leaves that look like tiny fish swimming around them. At the centre sits a lobed, cusped medallion with layered outlines, and pendants above and below lead to smaller medallions, giving the classic Tabriz medallion-and-pendant layout. Curving corner spandrels frame the field so that it reads as one large shaped panel. A wide border of palmettes, flowers and cartouches, with bold corner motifs and narrow guard stripes, completes the design. The fine, dense drawing rewards a close look. It suits an entrance, a bedside or a small sitting area.
