Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A clear turquoise field carrying thirty flattened Turkmen güls in three columns of ten, each a notched octagon outlined in near-black and quartered by a central bar, filled with hooked devices in gold, cream and salmon. Small stepped cross devices stand between the rows. Deep multi-band borders of hooked repeats, diamond diaper and bead lines frame the field, with pink rosette cartouches set at intervals down each side and a bold zigzag panel closing both ends. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The güls are unusually small for the weave — measured, all thirty together cover about 8% of the rug, and inside the field itself just under three-quarters of the surface is open ground. At 155×250cm this is a medium room rug, suited to a living room, a bedroom or under a smaller dining table.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural cream fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which matters on a room rug of this size that will carry furniture as well as traffic.

An open field is the practical consideration here rather than the colour. A mid-toned turquoise hides ordinary soiling reasonably well, but because roughly three-quarters of the field is plain ground with no drawing to break it up, anything that does mark it — a vacuum track, a crushed patch under a chair leg, a spot cleaned unevenly — shows across a wide stretch of uninterrupted colour rather than disappearing into pattern. The cream and gold inside the güls are the vulnerable colours, and on a cool ground any yellowing shows more readily than it would against a warm field.

A Bokhara is normally a rug about density. The gül is repeated until it crowds the field, and the ground survives as little more than the lines between emblems. This one does the opposite, and the difference is measurable. The thirty güls are about 13cm across and 8cm tall, so each sits inside its own cell taking up roughly a fifth of it, and all thirty together account for around 8% of the whole rug. Inside the field, just under three-quarters of the surface is open turquoise with nothing drawn on it at all.

That decision puts a great deal of weight on the ground, because there is nowhere for an uneven patch to hide. On a crowded field small irregularities in the dye or the beating-down of the weft are broken up by the drawing and never read as faults; on an open field they sit in plain view across half a metre of uninterrupted colour. It also concentrates everything else. Every warm note in the rug — the gold, the salmon, the cream inside the güls and the pink rosettes punctuating the borders — adds up to under 4% of the surface. The rug reads as turquoise and ivory from across a room, and the entire rest of its palette is doing its work inside a very small fraction of the wool.
