What is a Gabbeh?

Gabbeh began as the everyday rug of nomadic weavers in the Fars region of south-western Iran, woven for their own homes rather than for sale. The name is often said to mean raw or loosely made: instead of fine detail, a Gabbeh values open space, simple shapes and the weaver's own ideas. Today rugs in the same style are also woven in Afghanistan, India and elsewhere. Ours are hand-knotted in Afghanistan from natural wool. Read the full story in What is a Gabbeh rug?

Why Gabbeh suits Japanese homes

  • Soft, deep pile: longer than most Persian rugs, comfortable to sit on directly.
  • All year round: wool keeps the floor warm in winter and absorbs humidity in summer.
  • Easy to place: natural ivory, beige and grey pieces sit quietly with wood floors and tatami.

Genuine Gabbeh or Gabbeh-style?

Many low-priced rugs sold as Gabbeh are machine-made or hand-tufted copies with a latex-glued backing. A genuine Gabbeh is knotted by hand: the design shows on the back, the back has no glued canvas, and the fringe is part of the warp. Our guide How to spot a genuine hand-knotted rug explains how to check.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Gabbeh shed?

A new wool Gabbeh sheds some loose fibre at first. This is normal and settles over the first months of regular vacuuming.

Is a Gabbeh suitable for homes with children or pets?

Wool is naturally resilient and less flammable than synthetics, and a dense hand-knotted pile stands up well to daily life. Blot spills quickly and vacuum regularly.
