Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A pale sand field carrying two emblems in alternation: octagonal güls quartered by a dark cross and filled with small curled hooks in grey and gold, and between them an upright tree device — a central stem with three pairs of spreading branches — drawn at almost the same scale. Very wide multi-band borders of rosettes, hooked repeats and dense diaper in espresso and cream frame the field, closing at each end with a bold panel. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The whole rug is worked in a single continuous range of browns: measured, every colour on it falls into two families, and the eight commonest tones across the field are all sand or brown at different depths, with no step between them. At 201×247cm this is a large room rug, suited to a living or dining room.

  • Type: Hand-knotted pile rug

  • SKU: N31385
  • One-of-a-kind: Yes

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which matters on a room rug of this size that will carry furniture as well as traffic.

A pale sand ground is less forgiving than a red or dark rug, though the field is closely enough drawn that a mark has plenty to hide behind. Because the whole design is carried by small differences in depth within one colour family, keeping the pale ground clean matters more here than on a rug with strong hues to fall back on.

Most rugs of this family put one emblem in the field and fill the gaps with something small and subordinate — a cross, a star, a few knots of punctuation. This one gives the gap a motif of its own. Between the octagonal güls stands an upright tree: a central stem with three pairs of spreading branches, drawn at nearly the same scale as the güls and with comparable detail. The field has two emblems in it, not one emblem and a filler.

What stops them competing is that they are the same colour. Cluster the field by tone and the eight commonest are all sand or brown at different depths, running smoothly from about the weight of milky coffee down to bitter chocolate with no step anywhere between them — the entire rug sits in two colour families, and true saturated gold accounts for two hundredths of one per cent of the surface. Neither emblem can pull rank by being brighter, so the eye separates them by shape alone: round against upright, closed against open. It is a quieter way of running two motifs together than colouring them differently would be, and it is why a field carrying this much drawing still reads as calm.
