Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi rug from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. A column of stepped navy medallions runs down a deep madder red field, each one holding a floral rosette in coral, ivory and gold, with small birds and scattered blossoms filling the red ground between them.

Wide borders in navy and red carry hooked panels and stylised comb devices, framed by fine chequered guard stripes. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

This is the Khan Muhammadi at its most characteristic: madder red field, a single file of stepped navy medallions running its length, and borders wide enough to answer them. The type comes from the Turkmen weaving communities of northern Afghanistan, and its signature is the depth of the red — madder-dyed wool that darkens rather than fades with age, so these rugs look better after twenty years than they did new. Look closely at the field between the medallions and small birds appear among the blossoms, tucked in by the weaver without any obligation to be there. The navy is used sparingly and always as structure: the medallions, the border grounds, the outlines, nothing else.
