Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A hand-knotted Khal Mohammadi runner from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. Eight navy medallions run the length of a warm madder red field, each one lobed and stepped, holding a cross-form centre picked out in apricot, cream and gold, with small animal and comb devices scattered across the red between them.

Wide red borders carry hooked vines, rosettes and pale cream boteh, framed by narrow navy guard stripes. At 291cm long and 82cm wide this is a true runner, made for a hallway or the length of a kitchen. A one-of-a-kind piece.

  • Origin: Afghanistan
  • Type: Khal Mohammadi, stepped medallion design
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Size: 82×291cm (Runner Rugs)
  • Colour: Warm madder red field with navy medallions and apricot and cream detail
  • SKU: NKM7494
  • One-of-a-kind: yes

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Turn the runner end for end every six months, as hallway traffic wears one end faster.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

A runner is the format the Khal Mohammadi medallion design suits best, because the medallions were always meant to be read in sequence rather than taken in at once. Walk the length of this one and eight navy medallions pass underfoot in turn, each identical in structure and slightly different in its filling, set into a madder red ground that darkens rather than fades with age. The type comes from the Turkmen weaving communities of northern Afghanistan. Look into the red between the medallions and small animals and comb devices appear, worked in by the weaver with no obligation to be there — the sort of detail that only rewards someone who lives with the rug rather than glances at it.
