A hand-knotted Khal Mohammadi rug from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. Two large lobed medallions sit one above the other on a deep madder red field, each outlined in ivory and scarlet with a pale rosette at the centre, flanked by navy cartouches and set against a fine diaper lattice that fills the ground between them.

A wide navy main border carries scarlet rosettes and hooked devices, framed by ivory and red guard stripes with an ivory fringe. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Madder is the root that gives Afghan weaving its characteristic red, and the depth of colour here is about as far as the dye will go — nearly black in shadow, clear crimson in daylight. Against it the weaver has set two lobed medallions outlined in ivory and scarlet, the brightest thing on the rug, so the eye goes to them first and only afterwards notices that the ground between is not plain at all but filled with a fine diaper lattice. Two medallions rather than one suits a narrow room or a space where furniture sits across one end, since the rug is meant to be walked along rather than viewed from the middle of a long side.
