Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi rug from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. Two large medallions sit one above the other on a deep red field, each outlined in ivory and orange with a pale rosette at the centre, flanked by orange cartouches and finished with green and cream leafwork.

What sets this rug apart is the blue: not the usual navy but a clear cornflower, used for the spandrels, the wide main border and the ground beyond the medallions, so the red and blue share the surface almost equally. Orange, green and ivory accents run throughout. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

Almost every Khan Muhammadi rug uses navy as its second colour — dark enough to act as outline and structure without competing with the red. This one does something different. The blue here is a clear cornflower, light enough to hold its own against the madder, and the weaver has given it as much of the surface as the red: the spandrels, the wide border, the ground around the medallions. The result is a rug that reads as two colours in conversation rather than one colour with an outline, and the orange and green accents scattered through it only make sense because there is enough blue to carry them. Woven in northern Afghanistan.
