Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi rug from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. Rows of stylised flowering plants rise up a near-black field, each with hooked stems and a crown of blossoms, worked in crimson and scarlet so densely that the dark ground survives only as outline between them.

Wide borders carry a running vine of hooks and rosettes in the same reds, framed by fine geometric guard stripes, and the rug is finished with an ivory fringe. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

Khan Muhammadi rugs come from the Turkmen weaving communities of northern Afghanistan, and this is the planted version of the design: no medallions, no tribal emblem, just rows of flowering shrubs climbing the field one above another, each with hooked stems and a crown of blossoms. The weaver draws the same plant every time and it comes out slightly different every time, which is what keeps the repetition alive. The red carries almost the entire design here, with the near-black ground reduced to the lines between the plants, so the rug reads as a single deep colour from across a room and only resolves into pattern as you come closer.
