Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi rug from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. Rows of stylised flowering plants march up a near-black field, each drawn with hooked stems and a spray of blossoms, worked in crimson, rose and deep red so densely that the dark ground reads as outline rather than background.

Wide borders carry a running vine of hooks and rosettes in the same reds, framed by fine geometric guard stripes. The rug is finished with a golden fringe rather than the usual ivory. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

Khan Muhammadi rugs come from the Turkmen weaving communities of northern Afghanistan, and they sit apart from the gül-based tribal designs woven alongside them. Instead of a repeated tribal emblem, the field is planted: rows of flowering shrubs rising one above another the whole length of the rug, each with hooked stems and a crown of blossoms, drawn the same way every time but never quite identically. Against a near-black ground the reds do the work that ivory does elsewhere, carrying the pattern and leaving the dark to act as outline. The golden fringe on this piece is an unusual finishing touch — ivory is the norm — and it warms the whole rug at the ends.
