Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi runner from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. Six dark medallions run down a raspberry red field, each ringed with orange and gold rosettes, set into a ground worked densely with hooked stems, blossoms and cross devices in near-black.

Wide navy borders carry stylised cypress trees and comb motifs, framed by fine geometric guard stripes, and the rug is finished with a grey fringe. At 306cm long and 89cm wide this is a true runner, made for a full hallway. A one-of-a-kind piece.

  • Origin: Afghanistan
  • Type: Khan Muhammadi, medallion column design
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Size: 89×306cm (Runner Rugs)
  • Colour: Raspberry red field with navy borders and orange and gold rosettes
  • SKU: NKM726337
  • One-of-a-kind: yes

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Turn the runner end for end every six months, as hallway traffic wears one end faster.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

Madder gives a range of reds depending on how the dye bath is prepared and how long the wool sits in it, and this is the pink end of that range — a raspberry rather than the deep wine most Khan Muhammadi weaving settles on. It is a warmer, lighter rug for it, and the orange and gold rosettes ringing each medallion sit far more comfortably against this ground than they would against a dark one. Six medallions pass underfoot along three metres, with the field between them worked so densely in near-black that the red reads as the colour behind a pattern rather than the pattern itself. Woven in northern Afghanistan.
