A pale field carrying a dense all-over design of palmettes, flowering vases and leafy vines drawn in cream, gold, grey-lilac and rust, with no medallion and no centre — the repeat runs edge to edge and disappears under the border. A wide border of the same drawing at larger scale, with palmettes and a meandering vine, frames the field, backed by narrow guard bands and a soft green outer edge. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The field reads as a soft sage green against the gold border, but measured against the wool itself the two grounds are almost the same colour. At 202×239cm this is a large room rug, suited to a living room or under a dining table. A mid-toned ground of this kind is reasonably forgiving, though the cream in the drawing will show wear first.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which suits a rug of this size in a room that gets daily use.

The palette is pale throughout, so this rug is less forgiving than a red or dark one — marks and crushed pile have little pattern contrast to hide behind. Because the field and border are so close in tone, uneven fading would show as a shift in their relationship rather than as an obvious patch, which is subtle but permanent.

Look at this rug and you see a green field inside a gold border. Measure the wool and that division very nearly disappears. The field ground and the border ground sit within a few points of each other — both are a pale khaki-cream of almost identical hue — and neither is green at all. What separates them is a difference small enough that, on its own, it would barely register.

The green comes from the border, not from the field. Set a slightly warmer, slightly deeper tone beside a paler one of the same family and the paler one is pushed the opposite way: away from yellow, towards green. Cover the border with a sheet of paper and the field settles back into cream almost at once. Everything else the rug does is built on the same restraint — the whole surface is one narrow band of cream, khaki and gold, and less than two per cent of it carries the rust that punctuates the palmettes. It is a design that works by very small differences, which is why it reads as calm from across a room and still holds detail when you stand over it.
