Olive Green Open Field Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which matters on a room rug of this size that will carry furniture as well as traffic.

With four fifths of the field left open, this rug is less forgiving than a densely patterned one — there is very little drawing to break up a mark or disguise crushing, and the mid-toned green sits in the middle of the range for practicality. A pad and consistent vacuuming direction will do more for it than for a busier rug.

Two things make this rug unusual, and they work together. The first is the ground colour. Green is uncommon as a field colour in this weave, which runs overwhelmingly to red, camel and ivory, and this is not a sage or a muted grey-green but a true olive — measured at hue 68, right on the line where yellow becomes green, with enough saturation to read as a colour rather than a neutral.

The second is how little is drawn on it. Across the field only about eighteen per cent of the surface carries any ornament; the remaining four fifths is plain green wool. The devices themselves are tiny — small crosses in coral and cream, each about the size of a thumbnail, set on a wide lattice with generous space between. Most rugs of this family fill their field edge to edge with güls; this one uses the same underlying grid but shrinks the emblem and lets the ground carry the rug. The effect is that you read the colour first and the pattern second, which is unusual for a Bokhara-family piece and makes it behave in a room much more like a plain rug than a patterned one.
