Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A rug made entirely of horizontal stripes, running edge to edge with no border: wide bands of orange, teal, navy, gold, olive and rust alternate with narrow bands of small repeating motifs — dots, little squares, zigzags and hooked figures — in magenta, cream, red and blue. A broad band of rust red closes each end, with a short fringe.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from hand-spun wool. No two bands are quite alike: the widths change, the colours shift with natural dyes along each stripe, and the small motifs vary from band to band. At 298×424cm this is a large room-size rug for a living room, dining room or open-plan space.

100% hand-spun wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the dense pile of a Ghazni is made for everyday use in living and dining rooms.

The many colours and fine patterns are very forgiving of everyday marks and light wear. Because the stripes are dyed by hand, small variations in tone along each band are part of the rug's character, not a fault.

Stripe rugs like this one come from the flat-woven bags and bands of Afghan and Central Asian weaving, where narrow strips of pattern were woven one after another. Here the idea is translated into a hand-knotted pile rug and run across a whole room. Look closely and each band turns out to be its own small design: one is a row of tiny squares, the next a line of dots, the next a zigzag or a string of hooked figures, separated by wider stripes of plain colour. The colours are dyed and spun by hand, so even the plain stripes shift slightly in tone as they cross the rug — a teal band deepens towards navy, an orange one warms towards rust. From a distance it all reads as one rich, banded surface; up close it is dozens of small decisions, none repeated exactly.
