An ivory field drawn edge to edge with a fine flowering vine — palmettes, rosettes, serrated leaves and small blossoms in rust, brick, teal, moss and cream, worked so closely that the ground shows only as pale gaps between stems. A lobed medallion in rust sits at the centre with a pendant reaching from each end, and the same brick tone returns in four large corner spandrels and in the narrow band that separates field from border. A near-black main border of palmettes and flowering vine frames the whole, with several hair-fine guard stripes and cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in silk at 36/36 quality — 36 knots to the inch in each direction, close to 1,300 to the square inch and around 2.8 million in the whole rug. The pile carries a directional sheen, so from one end the ivory reads warm and creamy and the rust comes forward, and from the other the ground cools towards pearl while the teal foliage lifts instead. At 94×160cm it suits a bedside, a study or a small seating area. The ivory ground is unforgiving of spills, so it is happier away from where food and drink are handled.

100% silk pile, hand-knotted at 36/36 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.

The ivory ground will show a spill far more readily than a dark rug would, and a fine silk pile shades and tracks where it is walked on — that shading is normal and reverses when the pile is brushed back. Use a rug pad underneath to stop it creeping and to take the abrasion off the foundation.

This border looks navy and is not. Sampling the photograph pixel by pixel, barely a thousandth of it carries any blue cast at all — it is a warm near-black, closer to dark coffee than to indigo. The illusion is real rather than a trick of the camera: the eye judges a dark colour against its neighbours, and set beside an ivory field full of teal and moss foliage, a brown-black is read as blue. Weavers have exploited this for centuries, because a true indigo border would fight the teal in the field, while a warm black lets it sing and still reads as the cool frame the design needs. The same effect governs the medallion, where salmon and rust sit on a ground barely darker than the field, so the medallion appears to float rather than sit in a hole. Look at where a stem crosses from field into spandrel and keeps its colour: the palette never changes, only the ground beneath it does.
