A deep wine red field arranged in columns of hexagonal compartments, each outlined in cream and holding a pair of large curled hooks facing one another — one red, one cream — above a row of small pendant tassels. Narrow red bands separate one column from the next, and small cream stepped diamonds sit between compartments. Very wide multi-band borders of palmettes, rosettes and dense diaper in wine, cream and navy frame the field. Both ends finish in a flatwoven checkerboard panel in indigo and cream rather than a plain fringe.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan. The paired hooks inside each compartment are set in rotational rather than mirror symmetry, so the pair reads as turning rather than facing. At 201×271cm this is a large room rug, suited to a living or dining room. A deep wine ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have.

100% hand-spun Afghan wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan and finished at both ends with a flatwoven kilim panel.

A deep wine ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have and hides everyday marks well. The cream in the güls and dividing bands is the vulnerable colour; the flatwoven end panels are the most exposed part structurally, since flatweave has no pile to take the wear.

The emblem here is not the plain quartered gül of an ordinary Turkmen rug. Each hexagonal compartment holds a pair of large curled hooks — one drawn in red, one in cream — set head to tail rather than face to face, so the pair reads as rotating within its cell rather than mirroring across it. Below each pair hangs a short row of small pendant tassels, and small cream stepped diamonds mark the junction between one compartment and the next.

Rotational symmetry is a harder thing to weave than mirror symmetry and a harder thing to look at. A mirrored motif can be checked against itself as the work proceeds — the left half tells you what the right half should be. A rotated one cannot: each hook has to be counted out independently, and an error shows up as a lopsided cell rather than an obvious break in a line. It also gives the field a subtle turning movement, which is why a surface this densely packed does not sit still. The compartments are further organised into vertical columns divided by narrow red bands, so the eye reads the rug in runs from end to end.
