Deep Wine Khoja Roshnai, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, finished with an ivory fringe at both ends. A gül drawn on an 8.4 by 5.7cm cell only holds its internal detail at a high knot count — the fineness is the defining quality of this design and the reason it is graded above coarser Turkmen weaving from the same region.

About as practical as a rug gets. Two-thirds of one per cent of the surface is pale enough to count as neutral, and the whole piece sits in one deep wine register, so there is essentially nothing here for a mark to spoil. The trade is lint: a ground this dark shows pale fibres and pet hair long before it shows soiling. The small grey-rose flecks at the centre of each gül are the one light colour and they are what makes the field sparkle at close range.

Slide this field down over itself and the match falls away in almost perfectly even steps. One row gives 0.79, two 0.71, then 0.62, 0.54, 0.47, 0.40 and 0.34 — seven repeats, out to just over 40cm, each one about 0.07 below the last. The spacings behind those figures are 5.69, 11.38, 17.32, 23.01, 28.70, 34.64 and 40.33cm, so the row pitch is 5.7cm and it holds for seven multiples.

A decay that straight tells you something specific about how the rug was made. Errors are accumulating, which they always do when each row is set by eye against the one below it — but they are accumulating at a constant rate, with no jumps and no sudden recoveries. The weaver was neither drifting badly nor correcting back to a fixed mark; just placing each row against its neighbour with the same small, consistent inaccuracy, hundreds of times. At a 5.7cm pitch that is a great many rows, and the gül itself sits on a cell of only 8.4 by 5.7cm, roughly a matchbox. Fineness at that scale is the whole point of the Khoja Roshnai design, and it is why these rugs are graded above the coarser Turkmen weaves of the same region.
