A deep red field carrying a dense grid of small Turkmen güls, two kinds alternating: an octagon holding four cream hooked devices, and a squarer one outlined in fine cream dots. Wide multi-band borders in near-black and red frame the field, with a cream band of hooked palmettes and dense diamond diaper either side, closing at each end with a panel of small tree devices. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan. Almost the whole rug is one colour: measured, three-quarters of the surface is in the red family, and the pattern is carried by depth rather than by any change of hue — the güls are darker red on lighter red, with under a tenth of the surface in cream to catch the light. At 61×97cm this is a small mat, suited to a bedside, an entrance or a wall hanging.

100% hand-spun Afghan wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan with a cream fringe at both ends.

A deep red ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have and hides everyday marks well. The cream is the vulnerable colour here and it matters more than its small share suggests — it is the only thing separating one gül from the next, so keeping it clean keeps the pattern readable.

This rug is almost entirely one colour. Measured across the surface, about three-quarters of it falls in the red family, and everything the design does it does within that range — the güls are not a different colour from the field, they are a darker red laid over a lighter one. Between the tenth and ninetieth percentile the reds span some thirty-three points of brightness, which is the whole tonal budget the pattern has to work with.

What makes it legible is a very small amount of cream: under one tenth of the surface, placed as four hooked devices inside every other gül and as a fine dotted outline around the rest. Those points of light are what let the eye separate one gül from the next across a field that is otherwise a single colour, and they are the reason a rug this dark does not read as a solid block. It is a demanding way to work — the dyer has to hit several distinct depths of the same red, and any one of them landing wrong would collapse the pattern into mud. Look at it in daylight and the güls separate cleanly; look at it under a lamp at night and they close up again into a deep red ground.
