Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A deep red field carrying large curvilinear cartouches — lobed medallions with paired scrolling arms closing on a dark rosette core, drawn in near-black and outlined in a fine ivory line, with small starred devices at the junctions between them. Deep multi-band borders frame the field, the widest carrying a bold repeat of palmettes and curling leaves, closing in a striped woven band at the lower edge. Camel fringe.

Hand-knotted in hand-spun wool. The cartouche repeats every 48.25cm down the field — a quarter of its length — so only four courses fit the rug. Barely five per cent of the field is open ground. At 199×288cm this is a large room rug, suited to a living or dining room.

100% hand-spun Afghan wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan with a camel fringe and a striped woven band at the lower edge.

About as forgiving as a rug gets. Under six-tenths of one per cent of the surface is pale enough to count as neutral and the whole piece sits in one deep red register, so there is essentially nothing here to mark. The exception is the ivory outline, which is both the most vulnerable colour and the one carrying the entire design — worth protecting more than its small area suggests.

Khal Mohammadi rugs are usually all-over repeats — a small emblem stated many times until the field reads as texture. This one works the other way. The cartouche repeats every 48.25cm down the field, which is a quarter of its whole length, so the rug holds four courses and no more. At that scale the emblem stops being a texture and becomes an object: you read it as a shape rather than as a pattern.

And it has almost eaten the ground. Sampling the field, the near-black drawing of the cartouches covers about two-thirds of it while open red survives across barely five per cent — the ground is reduced to the thin channels left between the scrolling arms. What holds the whole thing together is a fine ivory outline that accounts for 0.41% of the rug: less than one part in two hundred, and the only thing on the surface light enough to describe an edge. Take it away and the cartouches would merge into the ground and the design would disappear. It is a great deal of work resting on very little wool.
