Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A deep burgundy field set out in five columns of stacked cartouches, each holding a hooked device in madder and near-black and outlined in gold and pale apricot, with small pendant forms hanging between the courses. Exceptionally deep multi-band borders frame the field on all four sides, running flowering vine, rosette cartouches and dark starred devices, with olive and gold accents. Ivory fringe.

Hand-knotted in hand-spun wool. The columns repeat every 20.5cm across and the courses every 29.8cm down. The borders take 63.5% of the rug, but two-thirds of all the pale wool on it sits inside the field. At 202×298cm this is a large room rug, suited to a living or dining room.

100% hand-spun Afghan wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan with an ivory fringe at both ends.

About as practical as a rug gets. Around a fifth of one per cent of the surface is pale enough to count as neutral and the whole piece sits in one deep register, so there is essentially nothing here for a mark to spoil. The trade is lint, which a rug this dark shows readily. The gold and apricot outlining in the field is the vulnerable colour and it is doing most of the work — it is what makes the design legible from standing height.

The borders on this rug are nearly twice the size of the field — 63.5% of the surface against 36.5%. On most rugs built that way the frame is where the eye ends up. Here it is not, and the measurements show why. Counting the pale wool, the gold and apricot that outlines every device, it accounts for 3.02% of the field but only 0.86% of the borders: three and a half times denser inside than out. Put another way, the field is barely a third of the rug and holds two-thirds of all the light wool on it.

That is what pulls the eye inward against the run of the proportions. Everything in this rug is deep — a burgundy ground, near-black drawing, borders deeper still — and the only wool bright enough to read at a distance has been concentrated almost entirely into the panel at the centre. The borders are not plain by any means; they carry flowering vine, rosette cartouches and starred devices across many bands. But they are worked dark on dark, and they surround rather than compete. The field's five columns of cartouches, repeating every 20.5cm across and 29.8cm down, are lit from within by that small allowance of pale wool.
