Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A deep burgundy field carrying a continuous all-over system of palmettes, serrated saz leaves and rosettes on a wandering vine, drawn in camel, cream and soft gold with touches of sage. There is no medallion and there are no corner spandrels — the vine runs edge to edge without a centre. A wide camel border of palmettes and flowering vine frames it, closing in an outer band of burgundy palmette clusters. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The field is about 70% covered in drawing, leaving the burgundy ground visible mainly as the spaces inside the vine. Borders take slightly more of the rug than the field does, running close to 40cm deep on all four sides. At 242×300cm this is a large room rug, suited to a formal living or dining room.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in the Pakistani double-knot manner, which gives the fine, closely clipped surface this kind of curvilinear drawing needs — arching stems and rounded palmettes only read properly at a high knot count. Cream fringe at both ends.

Practically, this is a pale rug wearing a dark field. Between the drawing on the field and the ground of the borders, camel accounts for around three-fifths of the visible surface, and it is the colour that will show soiling. The burgundy is forgiving and there is a lot of pattern over it, so ordinary marks in the field break up against the vine. The borders are the exposure: close to 40cm of light ground on every side, sitting exactly where people step onto the rug.

This rug is built from two wools, and it swaps their jobs at the border line. On the field, burgundy is the ground and camel is the drawing: the palmettes, the saz leaves, the vine. Cross into the border and the roles reverse — camel becomes the ground, and burgundy comes back as the drawing, in the palmette clusters of the outer band. The same two colours, doing opposite work on either side of a line.

Sampled and converted to Lab, the camel that draws the field and the camel that grounds the border are 6.5 units apart, and the burgundy that grounds the field and the burgundy that draws the border are 11.7 apart. For comparison, the camel and the burgundy are 46.5 units from each other. In other words the two wools are a long way apart, and each is essentially itself on both sides of the boundary. That is why the border reads as belonging to the rug rather than being applied to it: nothing new is introduced at the frame, the same palette simply changes which part of it is holding the pattern. It also explains why the design can afford to have no medallion and no spandrels. With the field running edge to edge and never resolving to a centre, the border inversion is what tells you where the rug stops.
