Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A cornflower blue field carrying a large circular gonbad medallion in ivory — the dome design, drawn as ribs and rosettes spiralling outward from a central boss, in the manner of a mosque dome seen from directly below. Fine scrolling arabesque covers the rest of the field, and a wide ivory main border of flowering vine frames it, backed by pale blue and navy guard stripes. Woven into the outer band at one end is a cartouche reading Mashreghi — Akhavan.

Hand-knotted in wool. The palette is held to the usual Nain range of six or seven colours, with the ivory drawing carried across a blue ground rather than the more common reverse. At 204×248cm this is a room-sized rug for a sitting room or under a dining table. A mid-toned blue ground hides everyday marks better than the ivory-ground Nains, though the wide ivory border runs along all four edges where a rug is walked past and will show wear sooner than the field.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends, signed in the outer border.

The blue ground hides everyday marks better than an ivory-ground Nain, but the wide ivory border runs along all four edges where a rug is walked past and will show scuffing sooner than the field. Take particular care of the signature cartouche, which sits close to the fringe where wear concentrates.

Gonbad means dome, and the design is meant to be read as one — not a dome seen from outside, but the inside of a mosque dome viewed from directly beneath it. That is why the medallion is a true circle rather than the lobed almond shape most Persian medallions take, and why its ornament spirals outward in rings from a small central boss: it is reproducing the ribs and tilework of a real ceiling. Stand at the middle of the rug and look down and the effect is intentional. The design is closely associated with Nain, and the ivory-on-blue treatment here is the classic pairing, though it is worth noting this rug reverses the more common arrangement by putting the blue in the field and the ivory in the drawing. There is a cartouche in the outer band at one end reading Mashreghi — Akhavan; akhavan means brothers, the usual form for a family workshop.
