A near-black field carrying a dense scrolling arabesque hung with palmettes, curled leaves and small rosettes in gold, red, teal and cream, with a lobed medallion at the centre worked in gold and coral and pendants reaching to either end. A wide crimson main border of flowering vine frames it, backed by gold guard bands of small palmettes. Woven into the outer band at one end is a cartouche reading bāft-e Irān — Esfahān, Sirafian: woven in Iran, Isfahan, Sirafian.

Hand-knotted in wool at a very fine gauge. The near-black ground is what makes the palette work — gold on dark reads as illumination rather than as decoration, which is why this style of Isfahan is so often described as looking lit from within. The drawing is fully curvilinear, with the arabesque holding an unbroken line across the whole field. At 204×295cm this is a large room rug, big enough for a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out. A dark ground is also practical, hiding everyday marks far better than a pale rug would.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends, signed by the Sirafian workshop of Isfahan.

The dark ground hides everyday marks well but shows lint and pale fibres readily. A fine pile crushes under furniture legs more easily than a coarse one, so a rug pad matters here. Take particular care of the signature cartouche at the end — it sits close to the fringe, where wear concentrates, and it is the part of the rug that cannot be replaced.

This rug tells you what it is. Woven into the outer guard band at one end is a small cartouche reading, right to left, bāft-e Irān — Esfahān, Sirafian: woven in Iran, Isfahan, Sirafian. Signing is not universal in Persian weaving; it belongs to the workshop tradition, where a named master takes responsibility for the cartoon and the finished piece, and Sirafian is among the best-known names in Isfahan. It is worth finding on the rug itself rather than taking on trust — look along the narrow band just above the fringe at one end, and the script sits in a panel about a hand's width across. The design behind the signature is a classic Isfahan arrangement: a lobed medallion with pendants on a near-black ground carrying a continuous arabesque. The dark ground is the deliberate part. Gold drawn on black reads as illumination rather than as pattern, and the whole palette is chosen so the field appears lit from within rather than coloured in.
