A crimson field carrying a continuous scrolling arabesque in gold, cream, sage and teal, with a lobed medallion at the centre worked in navy and gold and pendants reaching to either end. Deep cream spandrels fill the corners, and a wide near-black main border of flowering vine frames the whole, backed by narrow rose and gold guard bands. Woven into the outer band at one end is a cartouche reading bāft-e Irān — Esfahān, Sirafian: woven in Iran, Isfahan, Sirafian.

Hand-knotted in wool at a very fine gauge, fully curvilinear throughout. The composition works by alternating light and dark: a bright crimson field, cream spandrels, a near-black border, with gold running through all three to hold them together. At 202×307cm this is a large room rug, big enough for a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out. A crimson ground is practical for a room that gets real use, hiding everyday marks far better than a pale rug would.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends, signed by the Sirafian workshop of Isfahan.

The crimson ground hides everyday marks well, though the cream spandrels at the corners sit where a rug is often walked past and will show scuffing sooner. Take particular care of the signature cartouche at the end — it sits close to the fringe, where wear concentrates, and it is the part of the rug that cannot be replaced. A fine pile also crushes under furniture legs, so use a rug pad.

The cartouche in the outer band at one end reads bāft-e Irān — Esfahān, Sirafian: woven in Iran, Isfahan, Sirafian. It is worth finding on the rug rather than taking on trust; look along the narrow band just above the fringe and the panel sits about a hand's width across, flanked here by small bars of green and red. What the signature marks is workshop weaving in the strict sense — a named master responsible for the cartoon and the finished piece — and the design shows that discipline in how it handles value. Three zones alternate light and dark: a bright crimson field, cream spandrels at the corners, a near-black border. Left alone those would fall apart into three separate bands. What holds them is the gold, which runs through all three at roughly equal weight, so the eye reads a single composition rather than a stack. Cover the gold with a hand in any one zone and that zone immediately detaches from the other two.
